Welcome to the 02 Register

This is the first of what I hope will be a regular feature from the 02 Register. The current status of the Register is that while it still exists, it does require a little work to get things in order, particularly in terms of the database. Work on this has begun, but some of the information currently on file may be out of date. I would appreciate all 02 owners updating the information on their cars by requesting and completing a new set of 02 Register forms, copies of which can be obtained from me or from your state 02 Register representative.

I do not believe there is enough support for a separate 02 Register news-sheet at present, so I would like to use the various state club journals as the means of keeping in touch with 02 owners. Of course, if you are not a member of your local state Club, why not? Copies of these articles will be available on request from me or from your state 02 Register representatives.

Speaking of whom, the current representatives are: Gary Speechley, (02)570-3870 in NSW; Graeme Finlayson, (09)381-7182 in WA; and Clive Nicholson, (075)37-8348 in QLD. We are awaiting advice from other Clubs as to their nominated representatives for the 02 Register.

Other activities planned for the Register include a regular (weekly?) notice board listing such things as cars/parts wanted, cars/parts for sale or wrecking, parts swap and general notices. This listing would be faxed to 02 representatives on a regular basis. Further down the line, we could look at establishing a computer bulletin board service for exchange of information for people using personal computers.


There are a number of sources of information regarding 02s. Good articles on 02s (and everything else BMW) are found in the famous journal of the BMW Car Club of America, the "Roundel". Joining the BMW CCA is good value, if for no other reason than getting the "Roundel" each month. A fax to the BMW CCA on (617)876-3424 quoting your credit card number is all it takes to become a member. Just don't blame me if you break into tears at the prices being asked in the classifieds!

Another US publication well worth subscribing to is "European Car", published each month by Argus Publishers Corporation. Subscription enquiries should be directed to them at PO Box 454 Mt Morris, IL 61054-0454. Current costs are US$28.80 for one year and US$48.20 for two years. There's no fax number listed for their subscription department, so you'll have to call their editorial offices on (310)820-3601, or ask your newsagent to secure a copy for you each month. "European Car" frequently features technical articles on 02s (and other BMWs too!) ranging from engine and suspension modifications to overhaul of the windscreen wipers. There are also regular features on restored and modified 02s - but don't read these if you're easily disheartened. Most articles also include full contact details of companies mentioned for those who want more information.

Then, there's the "02 Register Newsletter" from the BMW Car Club GB Ltd, aimed at "promoting international enthusiasm and interest in the original BMW classic sporting saloon car", and who could argue with that goal? This is published bimonthly by the BMW CCGB 02 Register committee. Membership details are available from Pat Tremain, BMW Car Club 02 Register, 5 Digby Walk, Hornchurch Essex RM12 6NH.

Perhaps the most authoritative source of information, services and parts for 02s is Jaymic Ltd, from Cromer in the UK. Originaly founded as a panel shop in 1973. Jaymic moved into the specialised areas of 02 parts and restoration services in 1979 and now offers a range of services including parts (both original and remanufactured), workshop facilities, full or partial restoration work and 02 car sales. They even offer a body shell exchange service: take all the bits and pieces off your 02, and exchange it for a fresh body shell primed and painted to your specifications. They are located in Norwich Road, Cromer, Norfolk NR27 OHF, and can be contacted by phone on 0263-511710 or fax on 0263-514133. And yes, they have supplied parts to Australians. Their catalogue of parts and accessories is quite comprehensive, and includes useful exploded diagrams to aid in parts placement and suitability. Jaymic now also specialise in CS models too.

There are a range of workshop manuals available, from the factory 02 workshop manual in the blue binders (if you can still get them), and others such as Haynes. A good text is by Chiltons, a US publisher. Early editions of their "Repair and Tune-Up Guide" was devoted entirely to the 02s from 1969 to 1974. Later editions covered a much wider range of years, and so a wider range of BMW models. These and other 02-related books can be found at your local Automotive book store.

The Register also has copies of leaflets on various topics. There is an 02 Tuning Manual produced by BM Sport, Dymchurch UK (0303)87-4433, a guide to the 2002tii fuel injection system produced by BMW North America, a locally-sourced document on the Kugelfischer fuel injection system from Southcott Engineering, and newsletters from the now-defunct US-based tii Register. We also have photocopies of the 02 glovebox manual.

Finally, for those of you who have access to electronic mail services via an AARnet/Internet link, mailing lists exist for both BMW cars and bikes. Internet is the worldide "information superhighway" as it exists at the moment. Its links connect computer and "high-tech" companies, government and private research establishments, universities and institutes worldwide. The Australian component of the network is AARnet, the Australian Academic and Research Network, which connects us through to the Internet and users around the world.

Worldwide, there are a few hundred people on each BMW list, maintained by kind souls in the US. Richard Welty, <bmw-request@balltown.cma.com>. The bike list can be reached by posting a subscription request to <bmw@Catnip.Berkeley.CA.US>.

Locally, I maintain a listing of companies who may be able to provide goods or services of interest to owners of BMWs (not restricting the list to 02s). The list has been compiled from various sources: member recommendations; newspapers and magazines; other clubs, etc. I am always interested in adding to the list or refining its format. It's primary function is to act as a point of initial contact for members, since we don't have the resources to fully investigate each company for reliability or suitability of their goods or services. As in all things: caveat emptor - buyer beware.


Changes to super fuel in the past few years have not been limited to price fixing and the establishment of a price differential over unleaded fuel. The current brew of super fuel is down on octane rating (from 98 to 96), and this is of concern to 02 owners seeking to maintain the performance they have been used to.


Doug Grant is reporting problems with his 02, citing pinging as the primary effect despite being at the limits of what timing he believes he can adjust out of the distributor. A suggestion has been made to renew the distributor, but this would seem to be an overkill. Other drivers, notably some who own Minis, are reported to be adding aviation spirit to their tanks to top-up the octane rating. Doug is interested in hearing from people to find out whether fuel quality or octane level is causing concern to other owners too. The federal government leaflet, "Unleaded petrol. Take the step", lists 2002s from September 1975 to March 1976 as being suited to premium unleaded fuel, with the proviso that leaded petrol be used every fifth fill. In all honesty, however, I don't think people are putting unleaded fuel into their 2002s. Note too that leaded fuel is no longer advertised at service stations as being "super" - it's just "leaded".


Whilst on the topic of fuel, remember the "3 by 3" levy imposed in NSW on each litre of fuel? Three cents per litre for three years, with all the money going to roads, was the promise when this levy was introduced. When was it introduced? - it must be at least four years ago, and no sign yet of it being phased out. Is all the money going to roads, or into consolidated revenue?
