The BMW Driver's Club of
South Australia, has been in existence since 1983. The idea was born
when a member from BMW Club NSW was in Adelaide and met with five BMW
fanatics who were either current members of the New South Wales or
Victorian BMW Clubs and had contacted the secretary of the NSW Club to
see what needed to be done to form a Club for South Australian
enthusiasts.
At that time there were BMW car clubs in New South
Wales, Victoria and Western Australia - as these clubs were interstate
they were unfamiliar with places to go in South Australia to find parts
or information for items requiring restoration or repair.
From it's original roots, when BMW enthusiasts sought
the names of locals who were owners of BMW's (but members of interstate
clubs) to gather in the the Motor Trades Hall on Greenhill Road,
Adelaide, the BMW Drivers' Club of Australia (SA Chapter) began.
The Advertiser Newspaper gave the Club some free
advertising in the Motoring Section and approximately twenty-five people
gathered together to launch the South Australian Chapter.
First official meeting was advertised in the
"Advertiser" Motoring Club Notes on Wednesday the 16th May 1984 and was
held at the North Adelaide Hotel.
A Sunday outing for the Club was a drive to the
Strathalbyn district, only to find the local pub closed!
On the 25th February 1986 the Club was incorporated and
then on the 18th September 1995, changed its' name to the BMW Drivers'
Club of South Australia Incorporated.
An Adelaide identity who had a passion for the marque
was selected to be Patron and has remained in this position since the
Clubs' inception. He most kindly donated a pair of silver candle-sticks
which remain in circulation and are presented to the winner of the
annual Concours D'Elegance.
